Cross Country Championships (1977 – 1996)
1977
The 18th Nebraska High School Cross Country Championships were held at the Kearney Country Club course on Friday, October 21, 1977, with Bob Hauver of Kearney State College serving as meet director. The length of the course was 2.5 miles. The meet was conducted in three classes. Four district qualifying meets were held in Classes A-C and six districts Class B. A total of 680 runners from 129 schools participated in district competition, as follows: Class A – 31 school, 215 runners; Class B – 54 – 265; and Class C – 44 – 200. Participants in the state meet were: Class A, 19 schools, 91 individuals; Class B, 22 – 94; and Class C, 16 – 68.

The course was 2.5 over the Kearney Country Club Golf Course. The weather was perfect with the temperature in the 60’s. One-hundred and twenty-three schools registered for Cross Country in 1979. Thirty-one Class A schools were assigned to four districts; fifty-three Class B schools were assigned to six districts. Thirty-one Class C schools and eight Class D schools were assigned to four Class C districts. The first three teams and the first six individuals in each district and in each class qualified for the state meet. Participation:

The Boys & Girls Cross Country State Meet was held in Kearney, October 24, 1980. Bob Hauver and Rex Jones served as meet directors. Charlie Foster was the starter and referee. The course was 5,000 meters over the Kearney Country Club Golf Course for boys and 4,000 for girls. It was the first state championship meet for girls. All girls registering for girls cross country were invited to the state meet. There was a district competition for boys to determine qualifiers for the state meet.

Girls’ State Cross Country Meet was held in Kearney, October 22, 1982. The course was 4,000 meters over the Kearney Country Club Golf Course. Bob Hauver and Rex Jones served as meet directors. Ninety-five schools were registered for Girls Cross Country in 1982. Twenty-five Class A schools were assigned to four districts. Forty-one Class B schools were assigned to six districts. No districts were held for the twenty-three Class C and six Class D schools. They were all assigned to Class C for cross country and permitted to enter the state meet if they so desired. In districts with six or more teams entered, the first three teams qualified for the state meet. In districts with five or less teams entered, the first two teams qualified. The first six individuals qualified for the state meet from all districts.

The course was 5,000 and 4,000 meters over the Kearney Country Club Golf Course for boys and girls respectively. There were 118 schools registered for boys cross country and 109 for girls. In Class A, 31 schools were assigned to four districts for boys and 30 schools were assigned to four districts for girls. In Class B, 53 schools were assigned to four boys’ districts and 50 schools were assigned to four girls’ districts. In Class C, 34 schools were assigned to four boys’ districts and 29 schools were assigned to four girls’ districts. The first three teams and the first six individuals qualified for the state meet. In Class A, 31 schools were assigned to four districts for boys and 31 schools were assigned to four districts for girls. In Class B, 49 schools were assigned to four boys’ districts and 48 schools were assigned to four girls’ districts. In Class C, 43 schools were assigned to four boys’ districts and 37 schools were assigned to four girls’ districts. The first three teams and the first six individuals qualified for the state meet.
