LINCOLN –Health and safety education and awareness have become a major focal point surrounding high school activities nationwide. The Nebraska Schools Activities Association is working to bring awareness, best practices and educational resources to the 304 member high schools across the state. One specific area receiving additional attention is Sudden Cardiac Arrest as the leading cause of death amongst youth activity participants.
As a preventative approach, the NSAA is encouraging all schools to annually assess their AEDs each fall to include a battery check. August 6th coincides with the beginning of NSAA fall activities and should become a staple component of their respective emergency action plans. Earlier today, Governor Pete Ricketts proclaimed August 6th as the official “NSAA Check Your Automated External Defibrillators (AED) Day”. NSAA Associate Director Deb Velder, Assistant Director Ron Higdon and Board Member Wendy Henrichs were in attendance representing the NSAA.
Over the past year, the NSAA has launched numerous health and safety initiatives including but not limited to heat acclimatization requirements, contact limitations and hydration education. The NSAA will also be launching the national “Anyone Can Save a Life” platform at the upcoming NSAA Activities Directors Summit later this month.
